Maui Hotel Reviews

Maui has three main hotel areas. Kaanapali-Kahulua on the north-west coast, Wailea on the south-west coast and Hana in the wetter east coast. Which is better for you largely depends on what you want in your vacation.

Our favorite is Kaanapali, with its beaches, shopping, snorkeling. Kahlua is a short distance north of Kaanapali and has a more hilly terrain. The Wailea area in the south-west offers a similar vacation experience, bounded by Kihei a larger town on the north. Hana is at the end of the long winding road to Hana. A beautiful drive through the tropical side of the island, but not if you get frustrated driving behind a slow truck for an hour around the curves. Because of the distance, the resorts in Hana tend to be smaller than in Kaanapali - Kahlua and Wailea.

Westin Maui Resort and Spa: Located at the center of the Kaanapali Beach, many view the Westin as the prime resort in Kaanapali. With 758 rooms, this resort has lower priced rooms facing the mountains and higher facing the ocean. If you want a special treat, try one of the ocean-front rooms. Features a huge swimming pool, with 128 foot water slide. Price: mid-high. Our Rating: *****

Sheraton Maui Resort: Situated at the north end of Kaanapali Beach where Black Rock juts out into the Pacific -- making reputedly the best snorkeling in Maui. 510 Rooms, with some 80% having partial or full ocean views. A lot of rooms are on the first floor, giving convenient access to the pool facility, but reduced views. Airy and convenient restaurants, as well as more formal dining. Lagoon bar in the pool area. Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa: Situated at the south end of Kaanapali, we like the Hyatt a long with the Westin. Big "fantasy" pool with water slide and a children's pool with sand bottom. 805 rooms on 42 acres. Adjacent golf course. Ocean view rooms. Price: high. Our Rating: ****

Marriott Maui Ocean Club: Marriott's hotel on Kaanapali, with 420 rooms on 9 stories. Good location on the beach in the middle of Kaanapali. Price: mid-high. Our Rating: ***1/2

Royal Lahaina Resort: A mid-price entry in the Kaanapali-Lahaina area, with 520 rooms situated on 27 acres. A regular polynesian luau is attended by guests from a lot of other hotels and locals. Price: mid. Our Rating: ***

Ritz Carlton Kapalua: The most renowned resort in Maui. Situated in Kapalua north of the Kaanapali resort area. Has high level of service. Excellent restaurant although high-priced. Pool, poolside cabanas, Kapalua golf club. Price: high. Our Rating: *****

Fairmont Kea Lani Resort: Our favorite resort in the Wailea area. With 450 rooms on 7 floors. Includes free form pool with 150 foot water slide. Price: high. Our Rating: *****

Four Seasons Maui: Another ultra-luxury entry. Secluded at the towards the south side of Wailea. Features 380 rooms, with beach front location. Spago restaurant. Price: high. Our Rating: *****

Wailea Beach Marriott Resort and Spa: This is Marriott's entry on the Wilea beach front, with 522 rooms on 22 acres. Features three golf courses, fitness center. Underwent renovations in late 2006-early 2007. Price: mid-high. Our Rating: ****

Maui Prince Hotel Makena Resort: Located near Makena in the Wailea resort area, this hotel has 310 rooms on 5 floors. Shaped like a wing, guests have access to two golf courses, a tennis facility, large pool and fitness center. Price: mid. Our Rating: ***

Grand Wailea Resort Hotel and Spa: Formerly a Hyatt and now a Hilton, this resort has 780 rooms on 9 floors in Wailea. Split into the main hotel area, and generally less desired long wings. A long walk to the beach from the main resort area, but includes a large swimming pool including a fun water activity area. Price: high. Our Rating: ***

Hotel Hana-Maui and Honua Spa: This smaller resort, is in Hana on the eastern side of Maui island. On 66 acres, with 69 rooms, overlooking Hana Bay. A ranch-style resort. Offers seclusion and limited electronics in rooms. Price: high. Our rating: ****
